The objective of this project was to replicate the breeding roost habitat used by Ghost Bats in the Mining Area C region.

GCM mobilised a Wirtgen 2500 Surface Miner (2500SM) to assist in the excavation of the Bat Caves. The reason the Wirtgen 2500 Surface Miner was chosen for this project was that BHPBIO/Austral wanted to be able to remove the hard BIF material without having to drill and blast.

The excavation was carried out with minimal disruption to the environment, the footprint for the excavation was kept to a minimum as the Surface Miner was able to cut the trench for the tunnel without destabilising the batters.
